Homage to Ashwin Street

"At the beginning we rehearsed on the third floor (i lived in the basement), after i moved up the road we moved rehearsals to the basement. It was an absolute joy to be able to rehearse whenever we wanted and at no cost.
It allowed us so much freedom to explore our live set-up and to keep it changing. It's crucial to have the time to connect musically with each other when live improvisation (but NOT self-indulgence) are the aim".

I imagine Ashwin Street is now a Des Res where only millioonaires hang out. That's what happened in Edinburgh anyway. I declined an offer to buy my mother-in-laws council flat for £18,000 10 years ago, it's on the market now for £215,000. Pillock!

Cindy, in another thread you say somebody from Laika lived on Ashwin St. Were there other bands living around as well ?
As for the closure of such places, I assume it is the same in every city now. I still can't find my way to an appartment in Bordeaux as everything is ridiculously expensive. Can't even think what it would be if I were in Paris...

Great pictures, thanks. Ashwin Street looks like a photographers dream and a residents nightmare. An inspiring place to rehearse obviously.

I watched a documentary on Blondie last night, sorry, I'm not proud, and she lived \ rehearsed in a squat (technically not cos she had a rent book) in the Bowery, it looked remarkably similar to Ashwin Street..
