"there's a william burroughs thing called 'a distant hand lifted' that he describes as 'walkie talkie messages between the remote outposts of an interplanetary war'... i got carried a long, long way off...i thought of being in space and realising that you were too far away from your home to ever get back......."
matt kinnison wrote this to me in an email after he'd listened to "the crackle of my soul"... his words resonated with me very strongly and told me that in some ways at least,a few of my pebbles had hit their targets.i've chosen to follow a rough and rocky path with this new cindytalk album but after reading Matt's words i feel a renewed hope for it.I'm dedicating this gig to spaewaif and to matt.my set will be titled "a distant hand lifted"... it will be my last gig in japan for a while as i'm returning to europe in june to sort out re-issuing the back catalogue, finishing off and releasing "fieryplaneteyes" and the project with toby reynolds and starting some new projects that will, fingers crossed, involve proper live work...
i'll be swimming heroically against the waves once more ;-P the sounds on the night will be mostly breakcore, drum'n'bass and idm,i'll be plonked in the middle doing a set of super slow and screechy noise-poetry.the music of imaginary stars...drifting further and further out into space, attempting to send signals home... hopefully it will be a short sonic "film".i'm also hoping to use some "cornered film" footage.a skewed view of tarkovsky's "stalker",where you only see fragments of what's actually on the screen. an abstraction of sorts.should be interesting to see how it works in this context.i saw two of the acts on the same bill last week in osaka... noize creator's first 25 minutes was great, less breakcore and more his take on dubstepish ideas and nicely funky.i danced.the second half of his set wasn't so good,it got a bit more obvious, using crappy soundclips from what sounded like an american b-movie (unlike my dead cool soundclips from artsy french and russian films,erm...) and he ended up with that obligatory heavy metal guitar thrash breakcore, much loved by mosh-pit boys of all ages.yawn.i stopped dancing.i'll need to see x&trick again, his set didn't connect with me at all.in fairness though,i'm long gone from the breakcore scene, i had stopped bothering to go see anything unless,as in this instance,a friend like stefan noize creator came by.it'll still be nice to play alongside him though, his set from oakland,ca in 2001 is still one of my favourites of the last 5/6 years.
aye,an'ah hope yer back's no too bad tho' eh!?i was chuffed to meet up with stefan again for sure.i didn't much enjoy the gig,to be honest.my own set didn't work for me particularly well.it was a risky thing to do and though it worked with the film idea i couldn't see the screen clearly enough to be able to tweak as i'd wished.not too worry, you live and learn... musically, the night was saved for me by stefan playing a brilliant set.i always had faith in him but was a wee bitty disappointed in his osaka set, which seemed mainly stuck in that backward breakbore style.he told me he was itching to play more dubsteppy and i'm really glad he chose kobe to do it.i think he was too, that'll set him up nicely to add a few more tunes and get ready for playing in the dubstep room at kenny's party in ghent in late june.cheers noize creator... you brought the funk!!!
and cheers to you too mik,you did a sterling job for that party.in my opinion you were left a bit out on a limb by whoever else was meant to be organising the event.maybe it's none of my business but what the hell was junichi doing all night!!?
the cindytalk set list for this gig was as follows : vertical invasion.cloud symphony #3.one hundred years tomorrow.maglev.if we meet,we meet in silence.signalling through the flames.ghost echoes.a distant hand lifted.dream ritual.
Vertical Invasion is such a great opening signature (assuming your listing is in chrono). This piece must have a particular significance or must be particularly loved by you as it has been 'on the list' as long as any I can remember. If you subtract from FPE as suggested you better not subtract this opener because to do so would change the whole concept (imho). Do you still credit it as Bambule or have you fully adopted it into the cindytalk catalog?
A great set. BL and I tried to figure out a way of getting to Japan, we were only thwarted by distance and lack of money - a real shame, life's short, we should've just done it.
i'd never used vertical invasion in a laptop set before, though it was obviously in the fpe mix.tracks that haven't been heard by too many people can retain a freshness,i think.i'm very fond of this track and likewise, joy is the aim.both were recorded under the auspices of cindytalk and were loaned out,as it were,to bambule for praxis 29.they will reappear as cindytalk for the (hopefully) forthcoming fieryplaneteyes release.the subtractions are likely to be the dj'd bits,ie. other peoples sounds etc...if i can prize them apart, that is.
i'm glad you and BL didn't find a way to kobe for this set.it weren't that good to be honest.it was too beaty a night for me to attempt a set like that.i went oppositional (not like me then) and tried to divert the event with slowed down creakiness...i need to rethink my strategies for doing these laptop affairs.i have no desire to play the usual glitch/click/pop nonsense or those macho-noise assaults.it's poetry i'm after, that and scoring imaginery short films.i'll get there, just a bit further up the road and round the corner....
hmmm new laptop strategies... Could the balance between "visuals" and "music" be the key ? Capturing the audience's eye first... then going more and more abstract, up to a magma of sounds and images ?
BL/PO... i've always attempted to use visuals allied to sound, from the looped film snippets that cindytalk used live to the early darkmatter parties, where film was a crucial part of the dialogue.at this last otoya event,as mentioned before,i did the music in tandem with a skewed version of tarkovsky's "stalker",a version recognisable but not familiar.last year in berlin i performed "live" with films by oana camilleri and there are plans to do more of that in the future (hopefully beginning this summer).BL,when we were looking to do that show in france with you last year, following the debacle of our attempt to bring a band,i looked at several options of laptop and film but sadly the timing was not right.so yes, that is the way i am heading and have been for a while.i've never had a video camera,so i need to be working with someone who has to be able to start thinking about making my own short films.it's always been a dream of mine but music comes first, still much to learn there.

nice flyer by steve davies at maboroshi design in kobe.cheers steve.
Curious about what kind of set you are going to perform considering the rest of the line-up...

Yes. Thank heaven for limbs, I mean, if we didn't have them you'd have to go out on a vespa, then you'd look pretty stupid.
